A memorial service will be held in New York on Saturday, January 22, for former Chinese leader Zhao Ziyang, who died at 7 a.m., January 17, 2005 (Beijing Time).  All who are concerned about the future of China are welcome to pay their respects from 1-3 P.M. at the Sheraton Hotel in Flushing.

Zhao Ziyang was a key mover in China’s reform and openness movement. From 1980 to 1989, Zhao served as Premier and then as General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party. During this time, he made significant contributions to China’s economic and political reforms, promoting modernization of China’s economy while emphasizing the well-being of the people and the importance of democracy. Zhao was loved and respected for his humanity, humility and moral courage on matters of justice and conscience.

A press conference will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, January 20, at the Research Center on Asia Affairs (39－07 Prince St. 3H., Flushing, NY 11354), to provide further details on the memorial arrangements.
