2009年被以“顛覆國家政權罪”判刑13年、現在湖南赤山監獄服刑的異議人士謝長發告訴探監的弟弟：2016年1月29日，他所在的第八監區副監區長劉宏因為他看書的事情，用塑料板當著200多名服刑人員的面，暴打他的頭部，他因此絕食抗議達50多小時。因謝長發講述獄中受虐之事，他們通話不到5分鐘，就被獄警掐斷了通話。
