2014年5月16日，王清營被廣州白雲區警方以涉嫌“尋釁滋事罪”刑事拘留。被拘留之前，便衣警察搜查了王清營的家，但未出示證件或搜查令，抄走其手機和電腦。

王清營因簽署《零八憲章》丟掉了在廣東工業大學華立學院的教師工作；他與唐荊陵一同推動“中國公民不合作運動”。
